Research

In theory, theory and practice are the same thing. In practice, they are not.

I am currently working on concepts, methods and tools for the assessment of performance of complex technical systems, with a special focus on performance in terms of reliability, availability, maintainability and safety (RAMS). I am looking at these issues with the point of view of a computer scientist, which implies:

Establishing solid mathematical foundations for performance engineering;
Designing state-of-the-art-assessment algorithms and heuristics;
Designing new modeling languages and modeling methodologies;
Developing powerful software tools.

Concretely, I am working along three axes.

First, the improvement of classical RAMS techniques (fault trees, event trees, Markov chains, …), notably via:

the development of the XFTA fault tree assessment engine.

Second, the deployment of model-based risk/safety assessment, notably via:

the design of the object-oriented modeling language AltaRica 3.0, and
the development of the associated assessment tools, including the AltaRicaWizard integrated modeling environment.

Third, the seamless integration of models designed by systems architects and models designed by RAMS engineers, via notably:

the exploration of the notion of model synchronization, and
the study of scenario-oriented systems engineering approaches.
